Peer-to-Peer Lending – The Borrower

Peer-to-Peer Lending – The Borrower

P2P funding, since 2010, has allowed businesses to bypasses the banks and borrow money directly from individuals. Businesses get the funding they need, and lenders get a better rate than leaving their money in the bank. In between the borrower and the lender stands the P2P platform which facilitate the provision of loans to businesses and property developers, through a network of investors who decide the quantum of their bid and the interest rate. Because each loan is structured as a term loan with a fixed monthly repayment, interest costs can be predicted with certainty; there is no exposure to market fluctuations. The platform handle the collection and distribution of loans and repayments.

Borrowers not only receive funds that they would not be able to obtain from high street banks but often at more favourable rates. Funds can also be obtained quite quickly. Funds can be used for growing the business, working capital, buying an asset or developing a property.

Typically deals have the following features:

  • Term loans up to five years
  • Loans for any purpose
  • Interest rates are fixed (typically 8% - 13%)
  • Monthly repayments of Capital and Interest
  • Borrowers are established businesses
  • Security in the form of Fixed and Floating Charges over company assets and/or Personal Guarantees
  • No penalty for early repayment

Peer-to-Peer Lending

Lenders can earn more from their investments than they would from a high street saving account, often between 8% and 13%. Lenders normally seek some security for their lending as they are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

Loan Grading

All new loans listed by ThinCats will be issued with a Credit and Security Grade, represented by a series of “stars” and “padlocks” respectively. These are assigned based on in-depth analysis performed on the company requesting the loan, its directors, and the security pledged against the loan.

Credit Grade Stars range from five stars (lowest risk of default) through to one star (higher risk of default).

Security Grade Padlocks range from five padlocks (highest security in relation to recovery of investment upon default) through to one star (lowest security in relation to recovery of investment upon default).

The gradings support your investment choice, they do not replace it.

The decision as to whether or not to invest in an individual loan will always rest with the investor.

Lenders are encouraged to perform their own due diligence on each lending opportunity before any investment is made.

Lending through a Pension Fund

Since the new pension freedoms people are now investing their pensions in P2P loans.

The interest rates of peer to peer lending are making it an increasingly attractive alternative. While there’s always an element of risk, the consistent performance of peer to peer lending has convinced many people that the rewards outweigh the risks.

ThinCats’ robust and diligent processes for assessing business proposals and vetting applications for loans have made them an industry leader and cemented their reputation for high quality, lower risk deals.
Note: Since everyone’s financial situation is different, it is important for you to seek independent financial advice before taking any action.

There are two ways of using your pension to invest in peer to peer lending. You can use a Self Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) or Small Self Administered Scheme (SSAS).

With SIPPs and SSASs you are in control of exactly how and where your pension is invested. Interest earned by a SIPP / SSAS is tax free**, and they are particularly effective for higher rate tax payers because funds transferred to a pension fund immediately attract tax relief at your marginal tax rate.

We work with two providers to help investors establish a SIPP / SSAS that can lend through ThinCats.

**Tax treatment depends on the individual circumstances of each client and may be subject to change in the future

ThinCats is pleased to announce its patronage of NACFB.  The National Association of Commercial Finance Brokers is a trade body for business finance mediators, founded in 1992 in response to the growing incidence of fraud in the commercial finance arena.  It primarily exists to ‘maintain, promote and, when appropriate, enforce a Code of Practice, for the advancement of the members to increase their knowledge and professionalism on behalf of the Commercial Finance Industry.’  Beyond this, the body works to encourage good practice, education, training and transparency – all key factors in ThinCats’ own business strategy.
